“If you’re sleeping on a worn-out pillow, scrunching and folding it up every night to get comfortable, that’s a red flag that it’s time to update. Even if your pillow isn’t old and deflated, it might not be the best choice for your comfort and support.” -Michael J. Breus, PhD, The Sleep Doctor™
How often should you replace your pillow?
According to sleep experts we should be changing our pillow up once every 18 months, and high quality natural pillows will last much longer than cheap synthetic ones. There are also some tests you can do to ensure your pillow is up to date, after all we do spend around 8 hours per night resting our heads on them!
-Do a visual examination: if there are stains or it has an odor that is definitely an indication your pillow needs replacing. Over its lifespan your pillow is collecting dead skin cells, dust mites (along with their feces), mold, fungus, and mildew. the constant exposure to these pollutants can cause a number of health problems later down the road.
-Test the vitality of your pillow: if you fold it in half and it does not immediately spring back to its original shape that a clear sign it needs replacing as it is no longer offering your head, neck, and spine support. when your spine is not being supported and not in proper alignment for 8 hours per night this will inevitably lead to back and joint problems in the long run. If you place your natural filled pillow over your arm it should not drape lifelessly.
Why choose a natural filled pillow?
Synthetic pillows contain a variety of toxins such as flame retardants, VOC’s, as well as they have been found to contain higher numbers of fungi species, just to name a few. These chemicals have been linked to asthma, endocrine disruption, neurological disorders, and in worst case cancer.
Our Sleeptek natural filled pillows contain:
Organic wool which is naturally hypo-allergenic, and resistant to mold and dust mites. It helps regulate your body temperature while you sleep, keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. It can be quite firm which aids in support and also adds to the overall longevity of the pillow.
Organic cotton is grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides or defoliants. The cotton is then woven into one of the finest, softest fabrics available in most European countries.
Organic rubber from Sri Lankan plantations and tapped from the Hevea Brasiliensis is the highest quality and is a renewable source. It is an extremely durable, elastic material characterised by its ability to retain its shape and firmness for a long period of time. Sleepteks Pasha organic shredded rubber pillow is the most versatile from their collection, as sleepers can add or remove the organic shredded rubber filling to adjust its loft for different sleeping positions.
